How to Set Up Search Alerts in Google Scholar

How to Set Up Search Alerts in Google Scholar

You can easily enable your search alerts in your Google Scholar browser. Once your alerts are enabled, you’ll receive emails whenever new results for an academic topic are available.

  1. Open Google Scholar.

  2. Make sure you’re signed in to your account.
  3. Click on the hamburger menu in the top-left corner.

  4. Select Alerts.
  5. Google Scholar will open a new page, select Create Alert.
  6. Your email should already be inserted into the email box. In the Alert query box, insert the topic you want to receive alerts on.

  7. Select Update results to see whether the results resemble the kind of content you’re looking for.

  8. Click on the circle next to Most relevant results. If you want alerts on all results for that topic, click on the circle next to All results.
  9. Click on Create Alert to finalize changes.


There is no denying that creating alerts for Google Scholar is useful, however, you won’t always come across free articles on Google Scholar. In some instances, you can’t access an article unless you pay for it.

  1. Click the menu icon in the top-left corner of your Google Scholar page.

  2. Select Alerts.
  3. Find the alert you no longer want to receive emails for.
  4. Click the Cancel button next to the name of the alert.
